Marketing leadership

Do you need a Fractional CMO or a marketing agency?

If no one owns the marketing plan, another campaign will not solve the problem. If the plan is clear, you may simply need better execution.

The short answer: Hire a Fractional CMO when your business needs someone to own marketing direction, priorities and accountability across the team. Hire a marketing agency when you know what needs to be done and need specialists to execute it. Consider a full-time leader when the workload, budget and daily management needs justify a permanent role.

This is ResNova's decision framework, not a universal rule. The right choice depends on what is slowing your business down, not which job title sounds most senior.

First, separate a leadership gap from an execution gap.

A leadership gap sounds like: “We have several vendors, but I still decide what everyone should do.” Or: “We spend on marketing, but no one can explain which opportunities it creates.” An execution gap sounds different: “We know our buyer and offer, but need someone to run the campaigns or improve the website.”

Before buying another service, ask who owns the target customer, offer, budget, priorities and sales handoff. If those answers are unclear, start with leadership and a working plan. If they are clear, bring in the specialist who can deliver the next priority.

When does a Fractional CMO make sense?

  • The founder has become the default marketing manager.
  • Your team or agencies deliver work, but follow separate plans.
  • You are entering a new market and need a clear buyer, offer and channel strategy.
  • Lead volume looks healthy, but sales says the leads are not a fit.
  • You need senior judgment, but do not yet have enough work or budget for a full-time executive.

The role should have a defined scope and authority. Ask whether the leader can set priorities, review budgets, coordinate specialists and work with sales. Advice without access to the people and decisions behind the work can leave the same bottleneck in place.

When is an agency the better choice?

An agency can be the right fit when the business already has a clear plan and an accountable person directing it. For example, an HVAC company may need local service pages and a reliable inquiry path. A dealership may need paid media management connected to sales outcomes. Those are execution needs if the buyer, offer, budget and success criteria are already agreed.

Ask who will manage the agency internally. Someone still needs to approve work, provide sales feedback and decide what changes when results miss the goal. If that person does not exist, include leadership in the engagement rather than assuming it comes with every agency contract.

What if you need both leadership and execution?

You can combine a Fractional CMO with your existing team and specialist partners. You do not have to replace everyone. Define one owner for the plan, one owner for each deliverable and a shared scorecard.

ResNova can provide Fractional CMO leadership and coordinate execution across campaigns, websites, CRM and follow-up, and reporting. The proposed scope should name the people responsible, their capacity and the work included. A small specialist team can be a good fit; it should never be presented as an unlimited internal department.

What should the first 90 days include?

Days 1–30: find the constraint. Review the offer, buyer, website, lead sources, CRM and sales handoff. Establish what can actually be measured. Agree on the most important problem and what success would look like.

Days 31–60: fix the highest-priority path. That might mean improving a landing page, routing inquiries correctly or focusing the campaigns. Assign owners and deadlines. Avoid launching five channels before the first buyer path works.

Days 61–90: review quality and choose the next investment. Look at qualified conversations, opportunities and sales feedback alongside traffic and form submissions. Keep the work that is helping; change or stop the work that is not. Revenue may take longer to emerge when the sales cycle is long.

This is an illustrative scope, not a promised timeline for results. A new business with little traffic and an established company with a large database need different plans.

Five questions to ask before signing an engagement

  1. Who owns the strategy, and who does the work?
  2. What will you deliberately not do in the first month?
  3. What information and time do you need from our sales team?
  4. Which deliverables, specialist hours and outside costs are included?
  5. How will we distinguish more activity from better opportunities?

Bring one real challenge to the conversation: inconsistent leads, slow follow-up, a team that needs direction or reporting you do not trust. You will learn more from a specific discussion than from a long list of services.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers for the next decision.

Is a Fractional CMO only for SaaS companies?

No. The leadership need can exist in dealerships, construction, healthcare, professional services and other growing businesses. The plan should reflect the industry, buyer, capacity and sales process rather than reuse a SaaS playbook.

Can a Fractional CMO work with our existing agency?

Yes. Define who owns strategy, approvals, execution and measurement. A Fractional CMO can coordinate an existing agency and internal team instead of replacing them.

Will hiring a Fractional CMO immediately generate leads?

No engagement can guarantee immediate leads. Leadership helps focus the work and establish accountability; results also depend on the offer, market, execution, budget, traffic and sales cycle.

What should we prepare for a first conversation?

Bring your growth goal, current marketing work, team structure and the biggest sales or follow-up problem. If available, share aggregate traffic, inquiry and opportunity data, without customer-sensitive details.
